A bit more about me.
I have years of experience studying the harmful impacts of masculinity on men and boys. You can imagine how nervous I was when I found out I was pregnant with one.
I realized I only knew about the harmful effects of masculinity and didn’t feel empowered with techniques to turn my knowledge into tangible, helpful, positive strategies for raising my son.
Bringing Up Boys was born out of my fear of being responsible for raising a good man. A couple years into the process of raising this little man, and many years into the process of researching men and masculinity, I’m ready to share my ideas with you.
My academic work.
I obtained my PhD in Human Development & Family Sciences from UConn and my Master’s degree and Advanced Certificate in LGBT Health from NYU’s department of Applied Psychology.
I teach psychology at CUNY School of Professional Studies and in an International Baccalaureate Program in Manhattan.
My research has focused on masculinity and on the health and well-being of sexual and gender-diverse youth.
I am co-author of the textbooks PSYCH, Human Sexuality in a Changing World, and Childhood & Adolescence: Voyages in Development. I’ve published in numerous academic journals.
